Percussion chipped from the same chert

and flint used for common tools, the Bird

form presented here is recognized as the

'finished product'.

​

They are neither miniature cores nor

​

practical tools although some appear to

​

have been used as scrapers.

​

Hundreds of intentionally chipped chert

​

'Birds', in the same abstract form of the

​

granite 'birds', have been found on the SDM

​

Site. Many hundreds or thousands more

​

remain buried in the field and forest.

​

​

This fascinating artifact form is now used

​

to identify other later 'platform burial' sites

​

around West Michigan.

​

​

AND since they are found here, they should

​

be found all across North America and

​

possibly back to the source, somewhere in

​

the Old World.
