SDM CHERT BIRDS

COPYRIGHT 2011

DISCUSSION

Some artifact collectors will recognize this

Flint/Chert form as something they have already

picked-up and saved over the years while out

hunting for artifacts. Many Indian artifact

collectors pick up and save every curious piece

of worked flint from a site.

Basements and pole barns are usually full of

boxes and coffee cans full of chipped stones.

Some points to remember about Flint/Chert Birds:

1) Some were used as found; in the natural

shape of the 'Bird' they could see.

2) Some are "what's left" after making

something else out of the Flint.

3) Some are partially chipped to accent the

features of the Bird they could see in the

stone.

4) Some are completely percussion chipped

into the Bird they intended to see in the

stone.
