Percussion chipped from the same chert and flint used for common tools, the Bird form presented here is recognized as the 'finished product'.They are neither miniature cores nor practical tools although some appear to have been used as scrapers.Hundreds of intentionally chipped chert 'Birds', in the same abstract form of the granite 'birds', have been found on the SDM Site. Many hundreds or thousands more remain buried in the field and forest. This fascinating artifact form is now used to identify other later 'platform burial' sites around West Michigan.AND since they are found here, they should be found all across North America and possibly back to the source, somewhere in the Old World.

DISCUSSIONSome artifact collectors will recognize thisFlint/Chert form as something they have alreadypicked-up and saved over the years while outhunting for artifacts. Many Indian artifactcollectors pick up and save every curious pieceof worked flint from a site.Basements and pole barns are usually full of boxes and coffee cans full of chipped stones. Some points to remember about Flint/Chert Birds:1) Some were used as found; in the natural shape of the 'Bird' they could see.2) Some are "what's left" after making something else out of the Flint.3) Some are partially chipped to accent the features of the Bird they could see in the stone.4) Some are completely percussion chipped into the Bird they intended to see in the stone.Feel free contact us with a photo should youhave any questions about a particular find.
